Radiation detectors with NeutronRAE II
RAE Systems Inc. has announced the launch of NeutronRAE II, a personal combined gamma and neutron radiation detector that is certified as intrinsically safe. Intrinsically safe devices are specifically designed and certified to be safe for use in hazardous environments, a feature critical for first responders working in unknown environmental conditions. The NeutronRAE II detects gamma and neutron radiation at extremely low levels and is designed to alert first responders to the presence of radioactive material, including weapons-grade plutonium and illicit "dirty bomb" materials. The NeutronRAE is immersible in water for easy decontamination, and a concussion-proof case provides shock protection if the detector is dropped.

Real-time monitoring ensemble
Thermo Electron, Inc. and VivoMetrics, Inc. have combined forces to deliver the first real-time monitoring ensemble. The system is worn beneath hazmat protective gear and combines the Thermo Matrix CNET mesh network with environmental hazard detection, global positioning and the VivoMetrics LifeShirt 300 system, which monitors a broad range of physiological functions. The LifeShirt 300 from VivoMetrics is a simple-to-use chest strap that monitors breath rate, heart rate, activity, posture and skin temperature continuously and in real-time. Data from the LifeShirt is integrated with a Thermo Electron radiation dosimeter, which continuously collects radiation exposure information, and a Global Positioning System (GPS) radio uplink that transmits workers' geographic location.

Instant portable support
WorldWater & Power Corp. has introduced its MobileMaxPure solar-power critical-response unit that can be towed into a disaster area by pickup truck or SUV and immediately provide emergency responders and victims with essential power generation, water purification and satellite communications. With the flip of a switch, 15 solar panels automatically unfold to create a 12' x 18' photovoltaic array that generates electricity. A bank of high-capacity batteries powers the panel deployment and stores electricity for emergency night operations. MobileMaxPure has on-board satellite-based, wireless voice and data telecommunications and power to operate under the most severe field conditions. It can pump up to 30,000 gallons of water a day from various water sources, and at night, solar-generated electricity stored in the battery array can feed an available five-horsepower generator to provide lighting and support other emergency operations.
