City Guide in Brief

Barcelona
The centuries-old city of Barcelona contains everything that idyllic European cities are known for—museums, churches, outdoor markets, and pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods. Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain and a major travel destination that is beloved for its astounding works of art and architecture. While you’re in town for the International Continence Society 43rd Annual Scientific Meeting, leave time to explore the city’s breathtaking sites. We’ve highlighted a few attractions below. For more points of interest, visit Barcelona’s official tourism Website at www.barcelonaturisme.com.

The Basílica de la Sagrada Família is one of the most frequently visited architectural landmarks in the world, admired for its elaborate, symbolic façades and equally impressive interior. Although the foundation stone of this church was laid in 1882, the building is still a work in progress. When the masterpiece is completed (projected for 2026), it will have a total of 18 towers, the tallest of which will become the highest point in the city at 557 feet. Located inside the church is a variety of exhibitions that document the history of the church and the work of its legendary architect, Antoni Gaudí. Admission is 13.50€ for adults. Admission with a guided tour costs 18€. The Basílica de la Sagrada Família is located at 401 Calle Mallorca. Visit www.sagradafamilia.cat for more information about the exhibits and admission hours.

The Picasso Museum, located at 15-23 Carrer Montcada, invites visitors to see the world through the eyes of Pablo Picasso, a Barcelona native. The museum’s permanent collection comprises more than 4000 Picasso works. This year, the museum is celebrating its 50th anniversary with three special exhibitions showcasing different facets of the museum’s history. Admission is 11€. Guided tours and audio guides are also available. For more information about the collection and for admission hours, visit www.museupicasso.bcn.cat.

Take in a full panoramic view of the city at the highest point in Park Güell, another remarkable feat of design by Antoni Gaudí. Built in the early 1900s, the park seamlessly blends elements of nationalism, religious mysticism, ancient poetry, and modernism in the works of art and architecture that are peppered throughout the main garden. Features of the park include a museum, viaducts, and winding pathways to observe the park’s spectacular vistas and natural wildlife. Gaudí’s mosaic creations should not be missed. Admission to the parks is free. Learn more about the history of the park at www.parkguell.es.
